This year’s race has been cancelled.
Highway 2 is currently closed between Mt Wilson / Redbox Road and Grassy HollowCampground (between Inspiration Point and Vincent Gap) and will remained closed till winter.
I have finally contacted the Caltran engineers that are overseeing the repair of Highway 2, after the devasting winter storm that severely damaged the highway. They do not anticipate that Highway 2 will be open until this winter, at the earliest.
The section from Islip Saddle to Grassy Hollow will remain closed for a much longer time. There are washouts and much of the road is covered with rocks and boulders, some the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. The area pictured below is just East of Dawson’s Saddle (between Islip Saddle and Vincent Gap) is typical of the damage in this area.
